Virtual Railfan Welcomes Anchorage, Alaska on 14 Jan 2026. Drayton Blackgrove.Anchorage, AK — January 24, 2025 — Virtual Railfan™, the world’s leading provider of live railroad cameras, is proud to announce the launch of its newest camera location in Anchorage, Alaska, offering viewers a rare, real-time look inside the heart of the Alaska Railroad.
Hosted by Central Environmental Inc., the new camera overlooks Anchorage Yard, the headquarters and primary operating hub of the state-owned Alaska Railroad (ARR). The view captures daily yard switching, intermodal train staging, storage of passenger coaches for iconic routes such as the Denali Star and Coastal Classic, and activity at the railroad’s diesel locomotive shop. Viewers may also spot occasional military equipment trains moving to and from nearby Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson.
Authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1914, the Alaska Railroad was built to connect the ice-free port of Seward with the interior city of Fairbanks, supporting Alaska’s development, settlement, and resource industries. Anchorage itself was founded in 1915 as a construction camp along Ship Creek and quickly became the railroad’s headquarters—a role it continues to serve today. The line was completed in 1923, famously marked by President Warren G. Harding driving the golden spike near Nenana.
Throughout the 20th century, the railroad played a vital role in Alaska’s history, particularly during World War II, when it transported troops, equipment, and supplies while supporting the construction of military bases across the state. Despite major setbacks—including extensive damage from the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake—the railroad endured and modernized. In 1985, it was transferred from federal ownership to the State of Alaska, where it operates today as a for-profit, state-owned corporation.
Now operating more than 650 miles of track between Seward and Fairbanks, the Alaska Railroad generates roughly 60 percent of its revenue from freight, including intermodal traffic and bulk commodities, with the remainder coming from passenger and excursion services tied closely to tourism. Anchorage Yard remains central to these operations, supporting switching, locomotive maintenance, coach storage, and staging along one of North America’s most unique rail corridors.
Virtual Railfan’s Anchorage camera delivers continuous live coverage of this historic and highly active yard, bringing Alaska railroading to viewers around the world.
