The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad made a noteworthy addition to its fleet recently, all thanks to the generous donation of former Baltimore & Ohio Business Class passenger car #905, the Silver Spring. Donation of the car was facilitated by Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society Executive Director, Kelly Lynch, along with a generous contribution from an anonymous donor. The car was built by Pullman in 1925 as the East Newark and was part of the executive car fleet for the B&O’s passenger trains. Cumberland was a regular stop for the Silver Spring, as it traveled the B&O’s iconic Capitol Limited route. The car was rebuilt in 1945 at the B&O’s Baltimore, Maryland, Mount Clare shops where it was converted to the B&O’s business car configuration. In the 1960s the car was sold to private ownership and was often seen traveling across the country as an Amtrak-certified excursion car until 2019.
Silver Spring is currently being stored at the Adirondack Railroad in Utica, New York. It will be relocated to Cumberland, Maryland where it will be refurbished while still maintaining its B&O livery. Wesley Heinz, director of WSMR related that: “The donor also will name the car at a future time, most likely to be tied to railroad history of the B&O.”
