Rebuilding the Clinchfield

On September 24, 2024, Hurricane Helene tore through the U.S. Southeast, leaving destruction in its wake. Less than a week later, Hurricane Milton followed, compounding the devastation. The two storms resulted in multiple deaths and caused billions of dollars in damage. As soon as Helene passed, CSX headquarters began reaching out to employees in affected areas to check on their well-being and offer assistance.

CSX provided employees with essential supplies, including generators, extension cords, fuel, water, ice, food, and temporary lodging. In total, roughly 300 employees received aid, which included approximately 8,800 meals, baby food, pet food, several hundred generators, and over 10,000 gallons of fuel to keep them running. To further support its workforce, CSX donated $500,000 to the Employee Disaster Relief Fund, which awarded nearly $440,000 in grants to 153 employees impacted by the storms. Normally, this fund relies solely on employee contributions. In an extensive outreach effort, the CSX employee services team, along with volunteers from across the company, contacted more than 2,400 employees who may have been affected. When phone calls went unanswered, CSX Police officers were sent to check on them in person.

CSX employees also came together to support their colleagues and communities, hosting barbecues in hard-hit areas like Erwin, TN, and at the major hub in Waycross, GA. Railroad facilities were opened for employees and their families to shower, and the CSX relocation team helped find temporary housing for those who lost their homes. Additionally, the railroad offered temporary transfers to workers impacted by long-term track outages on the Blue Ridge Subdivision, ensuring they could continue receiving paychecks.
