CSX Indianapolis Line Subdivision A key rail line in Muncie, CSX’s Indianapolis Line Subdivision was once part of the New York Central’s “Big Four” system, linking Indianapolis and Cleveland. During its peak, it handled heavy passenger and freight traffic. Now under CSX, it sees 11 trains daily at speeds up to 30 MPH, remaining vital for regional freight. 

Norfolk Southern Frankfort District Built by the Nickel Plate Road, this east-west line connected Peoria, Illinois, to Sandusky, Ohio, supporting freight and industrial growth. Now part of Norfolk Southern, it runs 5 trains per day at 40 MPH, still serving regional customers despite reduced prominence. 

Norfolk Southern New Castle District Originating from the Fort Wayne, Muncie & Cincinnati Railroad, this north-south corridor remains Muncie’s busiest, with 24 daily trains despite a speed limit of 15 MPH.Though passenger service has faded, CSX and Norfolk Southern keep Muncie a vital freight hub, preserving its rail legacy while supporting modern commerce. 

ABOUT OUR HOSTOur host in Muncie, Indiana is EcoREHAB – a nonprofit that revitalizes abandoned homes into sustainable, affordable housing while providing hands-on training in construction trades. Through partnerships with Ball State University and Eastern Indiana Works, they offer an 18-week Skilled Trades Education Program (STEP) to prepare individuals for careers in construction.
